ATHLETE MENTORING & SUPPORT

DAVE MACKAY

MCounsStuds

I am a counsellor with a Master of Counselling Studies and over 20 years of experience working with athletes across school, community, and professional sport settings.

In my counselling practice, I specialise in working with athletes—particularly adolescents—to help them manage their thoughts in the moment, respond effectively to stress, and navigate performance anxiety. I bring a calm, focused approach to helping clients build emotional awareness and mental performance skills, both on and off the field.

My professional background

I bring over 20 years of experience across all levels of sport in Aotearoa—from grassroots community programmes to elite high-performance environments.

Like many young New Zealanders with a passion for sport, I began my journey by training as a physical education teacher. During my student years, I gained hands-on experience as a swimming coach, tennis instructor, and basketball coach.

After five years teaching at New Zealand’s largest co-educational high school, I stepped into a new challenge in 2008 as Coaching & Programmes Development Manager for the New Zealand Breakers. During my time with the franchise, I was proud to be part of a team that achieved three consecutive Australian NBL championship titles (2011, 2012, 2013).

I went on to serve as CEO of Auckland Basketball for several years, supporting the growth of the game across the region at both community and representative levels. In 2017, I returned to the secondary school environment as Director of Sport—driven by a passion for working with adolescents and a love for the unique experiences and opportunities that school sport provides.

Alongside these roles, I’ve volunteered for over 18 years within the Basketball New Zealand system—as a secondary school, regional, and national coach, team manager, and national camp director—supporting both pathway athletes and coaches.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring athletes through both the highs and challenges of sport and life. To strengthen my ability to support them well, I trained as a counsellor, developing the skills to walk alongside athletes safely and effectively.

While I specialise in working with adolescents, I also work with parents, adults, elite athletes, and coaches.
